Headed West

10 July 2012 - 10:06 PM

my buddy and I are doing a similar trip in a month but we will be trailering the bikes to colorado and hitting the surrounding area for a week then driving back. this way we have more time for the good stuff. I have been warned to stay out of yellowstone unless you like sitting in traffic all day. plenty other good roads all around it. I would also listen to nogear and at least hotel it every few days. it really does rejuvinate you. And if your not acclimated with wilderness camping (midwest camping does not count, our bears are more like big dogs) don't leave food in your saddlesbags or tent and invest in some bear spray.

I have a dream... well actually it's more like an idea

ok.. to deal with the theft, you rent out tool boxes and weigh them changing the weight every time.. motorcycle lifts can be manual.. you only need to operate the larger lifts to help the liability. (and have an iron clad contract agreement) but the bottom line is that you would be catering to people that are not equipped to do this in their own house or dont have the room.. so therefore you also need storage for the guy that is rehabbing his 67 camero. it is def a risky biz because you have a very large startup cost with return that comes with a trickle. I would compare it to opening a gym.. which is about as risky as opening a bar. this is the type of startup that needs major advertising which ads to the initial startup because you wont get a whole lot of support from the dealerships. (they are going to view it as taking business away from them). profitable dealerships make more on service than selling product. I know this because I have interest in one. what can help you with this is that there are a lot of dealerships out there that have closed thanks to chevy, but there is still a great amount of investment most likely up in the 300 to 400k. I would suggest you join richard marcinko's security team after retirement.

Insurance

Does the company your renting the bikes from not offer full converage?

They offer a damage waiver "after" 2000.00 dollars. I dont know about you but I dont want to be liable for 2g's before their ins kicks in.. its better than nothing i suppose and that may be my only option. State farm, dairyland etc.. will only insure a rental bike for liability only. little scary when I could potentially be dodging moose and buffalo

OK.. first time posting... my buddy and I are planning a trip on bikes from Seattle to Alaska renting BMW's.. after doing extensive research, it turns out most insurance companies will not cover rental bikes more than liability. does anyone know of one that will do full coverage? I have checked with dairyland, statefarm, kfb etc..
